War has arrived in Pakistan and it will be Pakistan which will be paying the price. What has started out as a couple of million Pakistani refugees is going to become a great humanitarian disaster. Never a country of this size ha gone through this chaos before.

What Muslims in America need to do for Afghanistan & Pakistan

Our POSITIONS:

  • The United Nations is now estimating that there are about 2 million Pakistani refugees.
  • The Afghan war has gone on now for seven years without bringing any resolution to the conflict and its acceleration into Pakistan will expand the humanitarian disaster instead of bring to a resolution.
  • We strongly reject the brutality of Taliban and their destruction of girl's schools.
  • We believe that if the US, which controls the Afghan border, cannot stop Taliban from crossing in and out of Afghanistan, Pakistan cannot do that either.
  • If the British in the 19th, and the Soviets in the 20th century could not succeed in their Afghan campaigns, despite being right on the border of Afghanistan, the US has little, and Pakistan has yet smaller, chance of succeeding through just military means.
  • If Pakistan descends into chaos like Afghanistan and Somalia, it will be the worse human disaster then we have seen in the recent past since it is the 6th largest population in the world bordering one billion Indians which are ultimately affected by what happens in Pakistan due to its one thousand miles open borders with Pakistan.

We therefore DEMAND:

  • Immediate stoppage of areal bombing in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • A negotiated political settlement between Taliban, Northern Alliance Mujahideen and the United States so that a national government is formed in Afghanistan and NATO/US is withdrawn from Afghanistan.
  • That Taliban and the US should withdraw their forces from Pakistan.

Role of American Muslims:

  • American Muslims must engage themselves into the policy discourse in America to strengthen the prospects of peace in the region and to avert worsening human disaster.
  • Taliban’s brutality, their destruction of girls schools, and armed rebellion against Pakistan is giving Islam a bad name and destroying the second largest Muslim country which must be condemned by all Islamic scholars.
  • Ongoing war in Afghanistan and the destabilization of Pakistan is not in the interest of America and could lead to chaos in the whole region.
  • American Muslims in general and Pak-Americans in particular have responsibility in asserting that Taliban don’t speak for Islam when they deny girls their education and demonstrate brutality which are not a part of our faith.

Goals of the Campaign:

  • End of war in Afghanistan
  • Respect for the sovereignty of Pakistan
  • Transfer of American engagement from war to human development, diplomacy, and law and order.
